You wouldn't think the history of the mid-19th century Mormon exodus to Utah and the settling of Salt Lake Valley would be particularly rich material for the writing of historical novels, but it's often from precisely such largely unexplored ground that some of the best historical novels grow. Chris Jefferies has set threee novels amidst these events, The Quest Begins, Will Mercy Rob Justice?, and this final volume of Zion's Promise, Amidst War's Alarms. Readers will find much that's new to them in this dramatization of little-known chapters in American and Mormon history, and Jefferies Books makes a fine-looking, sturdy product.
